I've only heard
The Magic Position Overture Accident & Emergency Magpie, Bluebells The Stars Enchanted Augustine
And so far I'm not as taken aback with awe and tears by his lyrics as I was with Wind in the Wires. A real poetic pinnacle, it seems.
I really like Overture in it's entirety and I love the simplicity of the lyrics. "Take me back to where it begins"
My favourite track so far is Augustine - especially the part about "Great white wings beating, in an attic, in a house, in the dead of night". A beautiful image and it's a throwback to the seabirds and aviaries of WitW. Also it sort of similar to a song I wrote recently for a friend:
Quills
I hid away in the belfry Of our hazy cemetery Held my breath as they lit Down on broken statuettes
Perched upon marble arms Fluttering up in alarm Seven sniped in the drizzle Clipped their wings with my scissors
All this awful mutilation Just to get some attention
In my cellar angels hang Upside down wrapped in twine Every feather will be plucked Loaded with sacred blood
As the script is finished Roaring wails diminish I set the sole survivor free A letter fixed to his knee
All this awful mutilation Just to get god’s attention
Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album!

Deffinately the opening lines to Overture..as I've stated in the other post "It's wonderful what a smile can hide if the teeth shine bright and it's nice and wide so magical all you can keep inside and if you bury it deep no one can find a thing" And like I said before, because everyone hides something from the world and Patrick portrays it so beautifully, as always EDIT: I've only heard The Magic Position Overture Accident & Emergency Bluebells Magpie (live) Augustine (Podcast version)

The occasionally over powering self-mythologising and lack of subtlety of the lyrics was what weakened WITW for me. This album to me sees Patrick maturing in pretty much all aspects as a writer, performer and espeically as a lyrcist. Augustine and Magpie for me shows a singer whos grown into his lyrical voice. It still has that slightly other worldy poetic feel that so many people attact to Patrick. But for me hes putting more emphesis on putting together words that will add to the sensoray impact of the music and less on pushing forward the Patrick Wolf "persona" bashed home in WITW that seemed to grow in certain fans imaginations.

I really like "deep in this treasure chest below my breast" That line is one I don't really like - mainly because for ages I heard it as 'deep in this treasure chest / below my ribs' and then when I heard the album version I was disappointed! x

While I agree that Patrick has been maturing as an artist on all fronts from The PW EP to Lycantrophy to WitW to TMP, I don't see him evolving tremendously as a lyricist. The beauty of WitW stems primarily from his choice of material. It's all wuthering heights and waves crashing on white cliffs. It lends itself to awe in a manner completely different from the rest of his works. In a sense, TMP and Lycantrophy seems to be much more personal - Lycantrophy is famously about the transition from child to adult, from one state to another. TMP is seemingly about being in a place in your life where everything comes together, being carefree and enjoying it tremendously - even though Bluebells, Augustine and Magpie deals with the loss of that magic and the terrible things we'll do to keep someone special close.

"was it worth all that war just to win. and so caught up in the speed of the day and your sin don't forget how the story begins"
i must say overture is definitely my favourite. certainly lyrically and possibly musically

I understand why people found the images presented in WITW appealling and evocative. Everyone however has something in music that their picky about, and I'm a real stickler for lyrics. I found some of the WITW words quite lacking as art, and in a few isolated examples a bit cliched or naff in the romantic terriorty you just described.

I'm not a huge fan of Patrick's lyrics but I like 'fell off the wagon into your arms' from 'Bluebells'.

Thanks a lot! A friend of mine requested a song for his band and I had this idea about a frustrated young man who poaches on angels in his local cemetary. My friend wanted something manic, dark and unpleasant to go along with this insisting beat he wrote. The demo sounds excellent, so I'm quite pleased.
When I heard Augustine for the first time, I smiled to myself and played it for him. We both agreed that they were quite similar - save for the fact that Patrick in a much better writer.
I usually write in my native tongue, but I recently began working on english texts. I'm afraid I haven't produced much so far, but I'll be happy to share it with you.

Guess that's just what you look for in lyrics. The songs of WITW were almost the first ones I heard of him, and those song ánd the lyrics the had were pretty much the reason I fell in love with Patrick and his music. But I'm a very dreamy-like person, blessed with a hell of a lot fantasy. Hearing someone sing about 'leaving london with a green tent and a violon or 'reach out and hold their tales' was pretty much some of the things I had pictured already. I loved him for singing about it, it was like something I could have written myself-just way better.
Haven't heard that much from the new album too, but I like the line from A&E:If it's never dark, how are you gonna know the sun, when it shines? Those aren't the exact lines I believe, but it is something like that.

I really can't pick a favourite. I love the positivity on A&E, I love stars, the magic position obviously and.. well I guess I love them all. I need to read the lyrics properly once the album comes out, cause some parts I just hear wrong. and I'm still not sure what the end of magpie is about, but I guess that's because I get so annoyed by Marianne's voice. (sorry bout that)

hmm... I'd have to say "And down by the foot of the cliff Where I gathered shells and watched the swells Blossom up around my feet I saw the ribcage of some wreck on the rocks What a tragic cost, for getting lost, when you just can't find the light through this fog"

Mine's "I'm feeling braver than I've ever been." I'm having it tattooed on my backside in a circle around a light blue star next week. I'm quite excited.
