Am I correct in seeing this song as an ode to Virginia Woolf, and the futility of her committing suicide during wartime ("now the bombs drop..")? She was pacifist.
The song also refers to stones and rivers. Woolf committed suicide by jumping in a river and filling her pockets with stones for fatal certainty.
(Soz to start a new thread if this topic has been covered before.)

And Patrick Wolf mentioned Virginia Woolf at the Bloomsbury gig too when introducing this song.

I read "To The Lighthouse" a few years back...
Seriously dull book...

WORD. It's a shame her fiction is earth-shatteringly dull, because her non-fiction is incredibly witty - she was fierce. 'I ran away from home when I was 15 to live in a scary derelict house on the river in Richmond - the same place where she lived for many years. The first half was written on an out-of-tune harpsichord in that house... the second part when I had come to the lighthouse [he talks about his Grandfather owning the last man-operated lighthouse in Ireland later in the interview]. Mrs Woolf is a kind of phantom behind the song - it's about finding hope, about coming through to safety and light' - from an interview Patrick did with Whitey P. Bear for Everett True's big wanky glamour project, Careless Talk Costs Lives, pre- Lycanthropy. So, there you go. Cheerio, Michael. xxx

Well done that man. Was trying to remember that interview.
I dont think the book is dull. I think it depends on what you are looking for when you read it.

I love the introspective stream of consciousness stuff like Emily Dickinson and Virginia Woolf.
To The Lighthouse is my favourite novel. Yes, the plot is virtually non existent. But i'm glad about that, it helps the reader focus on the essence of the book; the psychology, nuance, feelings, perspectives.
I can relate to the oedipal thing going on between Ramsey and his son for example.
Cue Orlando, I wonder if the title song Lycanthropy is inspired by VW's Orlando? Till I cut my pee-eenis o-o-off..
k, maybe not. lol

Each 'chapter' is a stream of conciousness from a different character. brilliantly innovative and engaging.

I really like that book it's amazing. If you like Virginia Wolf her book the Waves is pretty brilliant if you can plough through it.

I just bought to the lighthouse after a friend recomended it and having heard so much about it (well, mainly in the pw song by the same name but there we go!). Unfortunatly though its probaly going to be a while before I start it due to the backlog of gothic literature Im due to read for my Eng A-level. Pfft. Nothing worse than reading books you havn't got much interest in.

the fact that he has a song called To the Lighthouse is what got me to notice Patrick Wolf. I love Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse is one of my favourite books ever, I don't see how people can find it dull! There are just so many levels to it, ooh it is wonderful! Possibly just because I got almost full marks in my Alevel English coursework on TTL. and as for Richmond....yes! I live in richmond!

i tried to read to the lighthouse because of how much the song means to me, and although im a big book worm in really didnt float my boat. however it startd an obsession of drawing and finding lighthouses, which can only be a good thing.

i'm reading to the lioghthouse, i'm not finished yet though. due to going to school i get very little time to read (ironic really, as i'm sure reading thought provoking books would be far more beneficial to me than the average monday) So far I lvoe it. I catch glimpses of my own thoughts in some of the characters, but i know i'll have to read it again because soemof it's been read late at night and i wouldn;t be surprised if huge chunks of meaning are completely overlooked.

I'm reading To The Lighthouse too. I'm not done either. The writing is a little rambly, but I like it. The characters have so much going on in their heads, especially the women. Readin it gives me a real sense of place. I love trips to cornwall and the area.
