patrickwolf.proboards37.com/index.cgi?board=pw&action=display&thread=1186615918&page=4#1186681567This post is awesome, and leaves me with this question: Do I have the right not to be hit on the head? OR IS IT JUST A PRIVILEGE? As rudimentary as it sounds, it's a pretty interesting question, I think. I think it has a lot of levels, I mean, is the strike to hit you? Do humans have different 'rights/privileges' to animals? They get hit and killed every day(by us, by other animals)? This may actually be the worst-phrased post I've ever made. And that's saying something.

rights go with responsibilities!
in my mind, you have the right not to get hit on the head, but you have the responsibility to not do something to provoke it
OR you have the right to not get hit on the head, but you have the responsibility to be observant
or something like that

Wait... why did he say "no one has the right not to be hit on the head"? I just noticed that. Was it a typo? Because it completely goes against the whole "pissing people off and then saying it's free speach/free expression" liberalness-is-BAD speach.
Well anyway... to answer your question, I believe that not being hit on the head is just a privilege, because sometimes humans deserve it. If your friend is being a total jackass, you have the right to hit him/her on the head, as he/she has the right to take it. If you are trying to foil a robber's/murderer's plot to steal your shit/kill your family, they have the right to be hit on the head.
I'm not sure if this is all EXACTLY what you meant, but... yeah. Those are my thoughts.
I could have never imagined that the boy who is into conservative politics and trying to get me to date him would garner such fame on the Wolfboards.

rights are just illusions, too. Exactly my point, oh ye of considerable but not superior wisdom. The only things that are real are those that can be touched - and killed.

Rocks = merely illusions. As are the smaller rocks that split from the bigger rocks. They cannot die, therefore they do not truely exist. DO NOT MESS WITH THE GREAT VOICE OF REASON'S PHILOSOPHY.

Yes, my disciple. Rocks are merely illusions. INVENTED BY COMMUNISTS. And, as we all know, communists are the grandchildren of satan, Carl Marx, by way of Joseph Stalin, the son of satan. It must go without saying, that such spreaders of lies should be shot on site. As should rocks, and as they would be, if they were not merely illusions.
Might makes right, and thus we must be mighty. There is NO ROOM FOR MERCY!
Except when it comes to animals. They are not illusions, and so we, humans, the other real thing, must work to protect them.
Unless they are communist animals.

Rights aren't fundamental, they only exist as a function of some societies.
Which answers the bit about animals too.
What you consider a privilege depends on what you consider your rights to be.
I have to serve customers now.

Ah, my child, but what you consider your rights to be does not matter. It is what The One With The Gun grants you by way of rights that you must be concious of.

As has been said earlier, rights come with responsibility, but should animals, who are merely ignorant have responsibilities? Should we spare their lives if they work for us? What makes us think we're better than a cow?

The human race believes it to be superior to the cow, and is superior to the cow, because we are the Ones With The Guns. By way of force we rule the cow, and so the cow has what rights we give it.

What makes us think we're better than a cow? That's why we pump animals full of hormones to obtain their milk and meat as cheaply as possible; why we test our cosmetics on them and animals have no rights, innit?

Animals don't have responsibilities to do anything really, because of their ignorance; however humans don't have any sort of "responsibility" to treat animals in certain ways, therefore it's not really a true right to kill them for meat etc., it's just a privilage we have, because animals can't do anything to stop us, and they provide convieniences to our lives. So, I personally don't think animals really have any particular rights, but, each individual human has the privilage to treat them in any way they choose.

What makes us think we're better than a cow? I bet cows sit bitching about us constantly. Seriously. They look dead haughty. They probably think they have us controlled; us running about milking them, sticking our hands up their arses and such.
