I like all of my songs to be precisely three minutes long. I have six songs. Is one of them "Click Click Click Click" by Bishop Allen? Or "No Name #1" by Elliott Smith? Or "Vicious" by Lou Reed? my no name #1 is 3.03! why is this? I have Just for Now by Imogen Heap, Orange Blossom Special by Johnny Cash, and U-Mass by the Pixies at that time.

There's a Swedish lo-lo-lo-fi band called Valentine Academy who will only write songs that are under 180 seconds - one of my favourites is called "The Girl With The Mountain Fox Bag" which is 38 seconds long. The longest I have is Placebo's "Burger Queen," which is 22 minutes, 39 seconds. The second longest is "Sister Ray" by the VU, which comes in at 17 minutes 27 seconds. The shortest is "One Last 'Whoo-Hoo!' for the Pullman" by Sufjan Stevens - six seconds. Agrophobic Nosebleed have a 99 track album. The average track length is like 8 seconds or something. Generally a single run of a bad metal riff, some hectic drumming and a blood curdling scream of "WOOOORRMMSS OF ZIIOOOOOONNNNN" or some other such nonsense... i have that album ;D

I totally made that six songs thing up. I actually have 31 songs that are 3 minutes long! eek! that's a lot more than I thought.
And, sadly, my "Click click click" is 2:59, and my no name #1 seems to have disappeared! On the other hand, my St. Ides Heaven and Speed Trials fit the 3 minute bill.

The fact, Alei, that you are a Bishop Allen fan, makes me want to exalt you when my hour is up. MUCH LOVE. <3

How cool, I'm listening to Joanna Newsom right now. Her long songs make me pretty damn happy since what is good does not come to an end too quickly.
But, I often get bored with songs after about 2 minutes or so. Therefore, if the music is bad, the shorter the better.
BISHOP ALLEN?! yay for there being other fans out there.

my longest song is by my friend and it's called 3AM When Insomnia Strikes and its exactly 60 mintues long (I have only listened to the first 7 minutes and then sort of skipped around, it's deeply depressing and boring but sort of awesome cause she ends up singing herself to sleep so the last 7 minutes are her lightly snoring). Then comes alot of classical pieces.
Some long songs are really just long jam sessions, which can be self indulgant and tedius. The awesome thing about long songs is that they can alter time, sometimes 3 minutes really passes in 10 and sometimes 30 minutes passes in 10. In general I like songs around 4 minutes long
My favorite long songs (on my computer): Lou Reed - Street Hassle (10:59) is probably my favorite song at the moment; but its sort of cheating cause it's more like 3 songs. Television - Marquee Moon (10:47) Modest Mouse - Night on the Sun (7:38) Sigur Ros – Hafsol (9:47) The Velvet Underground – The Murder Mystery (8:56) Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Comely (8:18) Yo La Tengo - Blue Line Swinger (9:30)
Bob Dylan gets points for having all his best songs being over 7 minutes. And for singing continuously throughout them.
Modest Mouse have the best short songs (see Sad Sappy Sucker).

I find myself seeming to dislike songs that are round that 5 minute mark - I think at this point (in a lot of cases) they should try cutting it down. There are loads of 5/6 min songs which suck so hard as a result of being dulldulldull.
One of my most favourite songs ever is 17 minutes long, but short songs (eg, CTFTPA and some songs off of 69 Love Songs) are fucking ace too. Especially if they bring the ROCK.
PS: I am listening to 'Serpentine Pad' by Pavement. It is 1:16. It's fucking class. COINKIDINK?

Subliminal messaging. All of the songs I listen to happen to be about 4 minutes. Nothing in my playlist ever goes above 7 minutes.

i think we should try to differentiate "songs" and "pieces". i think once it goes past 8 minutes they become "pieces" especially if there are no lyrics.
