I'm such a new fan. :-\ I'd never even heard of him until December. Then, I went to youtube, naturally. I do believe Tristan was the first video I saw. I thought it was pretty much the most amazing thing ever. More so the video than the actual song at first. I watched it about a million times that first week.. Eventually I acquired real music, and Nothing wrong with being a new fan, I'm even newer! I think it must have been Tristan which I watched on Youtube between reading his name and seeing A&E on tele... yeah, I think it was.

Either April or May of last year, when I was still a poster on the Tim Burton forums, and there was a topic for Favorite Lyrics. Someone had posted lyrics to The Libertine and The Childcatcher, and they also had an avatar of him. And basically I thought "hmm. Libertine = great lyrics. Childcatcher = very intresting. Picture = very attractive. I should probably look him up on YouTube." So I did and I watched The Libertine video with my jaw on the floor the whole time. I was like HOLY CRAP POINTY SHOES!! DRAMATIC LIP-SYNCING!! HIS VOICE!! VIOLINS 'N SHIT!!! THIS IS THE ARTIST I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR!
Then I watched all his other videos that were up on youtube and then ordered Lycanthropy and Wind in the Wires, which I spent many a late summer's night listening to. Yep.

It's funny how bands are wierdly connected. I went from Arcade fire-->Owen Pallett --> Patrick Wolf. They interviewed each other, and I thought, "Eh, this guy sure is cool but I should probably only obsess about one solo violinist at a time." and went on with my crusade to marry owen pallett. Then a few months later I just looked him up one day and found the magic position music video. Then I bought The Magic Position, and then I managed to see him at Cafe Du Nord. The next day I bought both albums and joined the wolfboards... Edit: the interview is here, if anyones interested: www.wavelengthtoronto.com/back_issues/04_05.html

It's funny how bands are wierdly connected. I went from Arcade fire-->Owen Pallett --> Patrick Wolf. That is weird; I liked Arcade Fire way before I'd even heard of Patrick, then I became a fan of Patrick in a completely unconnected way. Then I read about Owen Pallet from Arcade Fire's wiki, decided I should check him out someday. Then I joined the Wolfboard, and everyone on here was singing Owen Pallets praises so I got Final Fantasy's albums and now I love all three of them, but in the wrong order... Edit: Thanks for the link to the interview, it was so sweet/funny. "PW: What a dumb question." "PW: That's not really a description." It made me giggle.

A freind, who i suppose has been responsible for what i listen to for years (right from blink 182 and greenday AGES ago right up to today). Anyway, he gave me a few songs off lycanthropy and WITW - and i thought they were fecking awesome so went out and got the 2 albums and found the EP too (naughty naughty i know).
The songs really struck something with me, dont really know what, but they meant more to me than any other music ever had.
I saw him live last October and then everything almost, i dunno, fell into place, and thats where my obsesion started. I remeber coming home from that gig and my GF thought i was hyper off all the vodka redbulls, maybe i was, but i think it was that the fact that id discovered something/one that was truely amazing.

Someone on LiveJournal was talking about the Tristan video, around the time it came out, so I had to go watch it.
I love the internet.

I can't remember how exactly I came across his music, but I know that the first song I heard by him was 'The Libertine' in 2005, around about the time that WITW was released, and after hearing that I got my hands on most of the songs from Lycanthropy/ WITW. Then I found out that he was supporting Bloc Party on the tour that I had tickets for that autumn (which I had got tickets for because I loved Bloc Party, but also because it happened to be on my birthday) and then susquently became more excited about seeing him supporting them than actually seeing them, predominately because it was pretty much the only way I could see him live 'cause all the gigs he was playing round london were 18+ and I was only 15. That was the best birthday ever.

I love reading all of your stories.
I have this fantastic friend named Sofia, who I'm sure some of you know (small interwebz it is) Well she .... and maybe even Graham with his A&E lyrics were my first encounters with the joy that is Patrick Wolf.

When Lycathropy came out I heard a song off a free CD, and liked him a lot. It was after I got sick that I properly fell in love with him. I realised that if I listened to music with headphones on it cancelled out a lot of my hearing problems, and with written lyrics, I could interpret what he was saying and understand it in a way that I couldn't do properly in "real life" then. Henceforth I had him on repeat, in my ears for several months

I first heard of Patrick on a band's forum. The band? Not saying. Suffice to say more people hate them than love them, accuse them of being Indie MOR whingers etc.
Patrick was getting discussed in highly glowing terms, with the keyboard player of said band absolutely ranting about how fantastic Patrick and his music was and encouraging us to have a listen to WITW. Still didn't listen.
On New Year's eve last year I had friends over (Batgirl and Sick Mouthy who sometimes post on here) and they told me I had to go with them to see Patrick at Thekla in January otherwise they'd disown me as friends. So I bought a ticket, then Lycanthropy, then got played WITW and then went to Thekla wondering what on earth I'd set myself up for. I nearly didn't make it; the sky dropped eight inches of snow on the southwest on the morning of the gig and the roads were impassable AND someone who I was trying to avoid was also going.
I was absolutely blown away. Completely. The bright shiny glittery fans. The music. The way this gangly brilliant ludicrously dressed lad leapt and gambolled around a tiny stage. Sing? Could he ever. So wonderful was the show that at the end Patrick came out for a second encore, alone, and did WITW.
Afterwards I sat down at the side of the boat. It was freezing. But I was warm; kind of stunned and feeling almost stoned and smacked with happy.

i was looking through flickr and got to the page of a guy who had a lot pictures of live performances on his steam. i saw this boy with the viola and the kind of different cloths and found him interesting. after a little recharge i fell in love with the very first song i heard, bluebells, with both the song and the video. i ordered the record the same night and the day i received it was the day i first saw him live, it was a good decision to go and see him without knowing a lot of his songs. it was the best concert if been to so far.

I was reading VOGUE magazine (can't remember which issue) a while back, and they recommended the Wind in the Wires album. And I went home that night and spent hours on You Tube watching repeats of The Libertine, Tristan and Wind in the Wires. The next day I went out and bought the album.

I found out about Patrick in 2005 when I was discussing Yann Tiersen with a friend who ruly felt I would appreciate Wolf if I enjoyed Tiersen. She was right and I still am deeply fond of PW. To the Lighthouse is the first song I ever heard from him.

Pitchfork (how lame!). They used to have this page where they reviewed tracks and I stumbled across the one for "Accident & Emergency". They linked to the video and I remember watching it and thinking " heeeellllllll noooooooo". It eventually became a guilty pleasure song that led to my buying the records and concert tickets

2 years ago (2005) i was a lonely and miserable 14 year old falling in love with music. In january 2004 i'd heard a band called bloc party. It was only in passing on the radio quite late at night, but the name stuck in my head. I went on their website when i was broed at school, started buying all their singles and they became my "adopted" band. I'd tell epople about them. msot people would reply "who?" and ignore me for about a year though. but then the album came out, bloc party got more famous, i bought tickets for their tour in october and joined the forum. A few people on the forum were big fans of someone called patrick wolf. I remember threads about him and the promo pictures for "the libertine". Patrick wolf was supporting them in october, and this was back in the days when i was so enthusiastic that i would ALWAYS listen to the supporting bands i would see. So i went on a quest for patrick wolf songs, it took me to free downloads, videos, and the official site. the first song i ehard was "a boy like me". Still beign a somewhat lonely and ignroed character it instantly struck a chord, as did to the lighthouse which i found the video for. I amde a new friend on lj (now one of my ebst friends actually) and she sent me wind in the wires and lycanthropy, except some of the tracks were live versions. I started heavily listening to lycanthropy, but then i had a week on holiday in amsterdam. i couldn't bear to be parted from patrick wolf (who was very much my new love) and so burned all the songs onto cd. I remmeber i'd already listened to lycanthropy many a time so i wa slistening to wind in the wires in the car and falling asleep a little bit becaus ei was so tired, but then tristan started playing and completely shocked me into being awake. I had to listen to it again and again because it made me feel so alive. That holiday in amsterdam was when i really bonded with all the albums, and then when i saw him that cotober supporting bloc aprty i was veryvery enthusiatic. and annoyed by the amount of people around me talking and not payign attention or making snide remarks about patrick's appearance or music. I was telling the people around me (we'd amde friends with them outside) the name of every song as it came on. And what's really nice is i;'ve looked them up on ymspace since and they're big fans of patrick too now. oh yes, and then 3 days later i saw him at the scala on halloween. I was meant to be going with ym sister but she was ill and iu was quite scared on the way there. remember i was still 14 and having to travel to kings cross on my own. I got to the front for the gig and it remains one of my happiest memories to this day.
THE END
(the msot ridiculously long account of how soemone heard patrick wolf EVER )
